From idea to canvas

Making of

Every painting in this series is built up in the same careful way, layer by layer and colour by colour. This page shows the steps. (Example text and photos: replace them with real photos of each stage.)

1. Choosing the flowers

Every painting starts with a flower. Hibiscus, irises, daisies, pansies: each one gives the painting its own character and its own colour palette. Replace this text with how the artist chooses them.

2. The design

The composition always has the same structure: a dark bamboo grove in the middle, framed by a border of flowers and leaves. The shapes are drawn out first. Describe here whether this happens on paper, on the computer or straight onto the canvas.

3. The background

Next the large areas of colour go on: the dark ground, the black of the bamboo grove, the base colour of the border. Describe which paint is used and how many layers.

4. Colour by colour

Then the shapes are filled in one colour at a time, with sharp, clean edges. This is the part that takes the most time. Describe how the sharp edges are made: with tape, a fine brush, or both.

5. The details

Finally come the fine lines: the veins in the leaves, the hearts of the flowers, the joints of the bamboo. After that the painting is signed and the sides are finished.

How long does it take?

Describe here roughly how long one painting takes, from first sketch to signature.
